Sharing a quick update that we were able to grow more of our own fresh fruits and vegetables this year than ever before, including our first fresh fig! This beauty of a fig tree I ordered came with three already on it, and the kids and I split the first ripe one last night so they could taste how delicious a fresh fig right from the tree can be.
Our other most kid-friendly crops this season have included delicious snow peas picked and eaten right from the garden, kale, spinach, and fresh green beans, which my son loves. I’ve been eating bright red and yellow cherry tomatoes daily, which can be another kid-friendly food for kids who are less picky than mine!
Along with home gardening and urban farming, citizen science can help to support the transition to a more sustainable food system. Here’s a citizen science project happening now around growing food.
We also planted blackberry bushes and other fruit trees this year and are hopeful for more fresh fruit in next year’s harvest. By then I expect to have used all this zucchini. Let me know if you want any!
