The Great Coneflower Project?

Well, we managed to grow about a dozen lovely Lemon Queen Sunflowers for our participation in the Great Sunflower Project. Before they bloomed, they all got blown over in a crazy windstorm that also left enormous branches downed all over the yard. I discovered my meager gardening skills weren’t enough to save them. So instead of a photogenic sunflower garden teeming with buzzing bees and happy, photogenic neighborhood children to share with you… we managed to submit one pollinator count so far this summer at the site, using our well-established stand of purple coneflower instead. Apologies for the late post, and I do hope to continue participating in the project, but in a more scaled-back way. As a farmer’s daughter, it comes as no surprise that some of our outdoor adventures in kid citizen science will be thwarted by the weather. Until next time… more book recommendations and some national park adventures coming soon!
